SSH – Dallas Earns Pulmonary Center of Excellence Designation

Select Specialty Hospital (SSH) – Dallas recently received the Pulmonary Center of Excellence (PCOE) designation from their parent company, Select Medical. This award is exclusive to facilities in the Select Medical family of hospitals.

“Here at Select, we feel a very real responsibility to provide the best possible care for our patients,” said Dr. Samuel Hammerman, MD, MMM, CPE, FCCP, Chief Medical Officer for Select Medical. “We already maintain very high standards for ourselves, often well above national benchmarks. However, this designation means a hospital has met even more rigorous protocols to take it to the next level of care.”

The designation certifies that a hospital provides the absolute very latest protocols and best practices in the nation for mechanical ventilation and care. Beginning in 2015, many within Select Medical’s network of more than 100 specialty sites began the rigorous process of applying for this designation.

“Our goal is simple – maximize a patient’s level of function while decreasing or eliminating the need for mechanical ventilation,” said Gloria Skinner, MSN, RN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for Select Medical. “Our hospitals already do this well, but the new designation means a hospital has gone above and beyond to truly maximize the highest discharge-to-home rate possible. This should return even more patients to a high-quality, productive life.”

Hospitals that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of ventilator weaning and patient mobility, along with establish medication protocols and effective strategies for minimizing ventilator associated pneumonia receive the PCOE designation. SSH-Dallas’ pulmonary team, led by Medical Director Dr. Michael Blackmon, is comprised of pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists, dieticians and other specialists, all trained in caring for the acute pulmonary patient.

SSH – Dallas is a 60-bed hospital serving Allen, Carrollton, Denton, Frisco, McKinney, Plano and all other North Dallas cities and suburbs. “I am very proud of our hospital,” said Holly Powell, CEO for SSH – Dallas. “This team stops at nothing to do what is best for our patients.”

July 26, 2013 - SSH-Dallas Named Recognized for Quality Respiratory Care

Select specialty hospital-Dallas has been named a 2013 quality respiratory care institute by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

To earn this distinction, Select Specialty Hospital North Dallas had to demonstrate and ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing respiratory care services. Out of nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals, only 700 (approximately 15 percentage of hospitals) have received this distinction from the American Association for Respiratory Care.
